The technical term for Propecia is Finasteride, and it goes by at least a dozen other names, some of which are Proscar, Hyplafin, and Fincar. This drug is useful for a diverse set of illnesses including prostate cancer and male pattern baldness, technically termed androgenetic alopecia. Almost half of those treated with Propecia received some regrowth of hair and a little less than half had no further loss. Once the Propecia is stopped, it takes 6 to 12 months for the hair loss to occur again. Thus, you have to be on it full-time. It works almost exclusively in the crown area and the hairline.
Propecia doesn’t work in women, however. There is some debate about whether it for works treating prostate cancer because some doctors suggest that it doesn’t work against lethal tumors, but that it only reduces the size of tumors that would not be lethal. The side effects of impotence, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, and testicular pain are sometimes not worth the cost for men. The treatement works in conjunction with the testicles and the adrenal glands with the aid of the sex hormone-binding globulin. The testosterone is converted into DHT, and that is what regrows hair. Merck & Co. makes a similar drug called Proscar, and sometimes patients split the dosage of Proscar to get an effective Propecia-like treatment. Merck & Co. makes both drugs.
There is a whole host of drug companies outside the United States that manufacture generic finasteride like Actavis, Ranbaxy, and Teva. It has literally 63% bioavailability according to tests, it works with hepatic metabolism, it has a half life of 6 hours for adults and 8 hours for the elderly, and over half of the excretion at 57% is done through urine and 39% as urine metabolites. It will cause birth defects in unborn babies so keep it away from women.
